Research Practice Sociology of Rural and Urban Areas for Students of Department of Sociology

In order to hone the ability of field research, a number of UB Sociology students participating in the Village-City Sociology Course participated in the field work on 9 – 12 November 2017. Students from three classes, with around 150 people, were distributed in several villages in Karangploso Subdistrict, such as Girimoyo (Genengan, Ngambon, Karangploso), Kepuharjo Village (Wringinanom, Karangploso Wetan , Kepuh Utara, Kepuh Selatan, Turi Rejo, Klasih), Ngijo Village (Kagrengan, Ngijo Krajan Hamlet, Leses, Kedawung, Takeran, Kendalsari ).

This activity aims to enable students to identify social phenomena in a peri-urban patterned society, characterized by mixed urban values, and rural areas in the same social space. Because Karangploso District is directly adjacent to the City of Malang, this is possible. Students learn the issue of sustainable development, by practicing the use of quantitative methods by using the Village Building Index (IDM) indicator.

Through this activity, students are expected to be able to photograph the phenomena of social life of peri urban citizens, while measuring the impact of the village development process that has been carried out by the government. Thus, students can see the potential and problems faced by the government and villagers. Furthermore, from mapping these potentials and problems, it can be followed up with community empowerment programs.
